Spirit Nova Scotia Local Food Award

The 2nd Annual Spirit Nova Scotia Local Food Award, co-sponsored by Spirit of Nova Scotia and Select Nova Scotia, celebrates individuals and organizations that have made a significant contribution to the local food movement in Nova Scotia.  

 Nominations are open from May 1 – June 22, 2009. Download nomination form and submit the form on page 3.

Award categories
Prizes will be awarded for three categories:

- Producer (farmer/fisher),
-Non-profit (organizations, institutions, individuals etc.),

- Business (restaurants, retail etc.).

Criteria for award
Nominees will be evaluated on their achievements in the following four areas: 

A. Environmental stewardship:

                Steps taken to reduce fossil fuel dependency 

                Recycling and waste reduction practices

                Stewardship practices


B. Community Engagement:

              Contributions to community

Partnerships with other organizations

C. Promotion of Local Food:

                Marketing strategies pertaining to local foods generated by the applicant

                Public education efforts by the applicant


D. Creativity and Innovation:

Reaching new audiences with the local foods message

              Offering services/products to the local community

Nominations must be e-mailed by June 22, 2009. A panel of judges will create a short list of nominees for each category. The general public will be invited to vote for winners in each category (via selectnovascotia.ca website) from July 24 – August 7, 2009


Last year Spirit of Nova Scotia initiated the awards and the three winners were:

Producer category: Jeremy Frith & Sue Brown, Mountain Meadow Farm, Baddeck, NS
Business category: Sean Gallagher of Local Source Market, Halifax, NS
Non-profit Category: Kathy Aldous & Hazel Dill, with Dr. Arthur Hines School, Friends of Harmony Park, and the Hants Shore Community Health Centre for the Dr. Arthur Hines Elementary School Garden, Summerville, NS

Note: Winners are not eligible for nomination the following year.
